Laser Rhinoplasty
Laser rhinoplasty is just one of the many uses for lasers in plastic surgery today. There are several types of medical lasers and different ones can be used for skin resurfacing, tattoo removal, varicose vein treatment, and treating a number of skin conditions. But how are they used in rhinoplasty?
Lasers are used in rhinoplasty surgery to correct deformities caused by an over growth of thickened skin. When used in conjunction with traditional rhinoplasty, they can eliminate thickened skin that causes a large, bulbous nasal tip. W.C.Fields would have benefited immensely from this treatment had it been available in his day. It is a non-invasive procedure for those who fear the surgery. Two lasers can be used with local anaesthesia to treat skin thickening caused by acne rosacea that is caused by bacteria on the skin. In severe cases, it shows up as red bumps and can cause thickened skin and a bulbous nose tip. The laser heats the skin and destroys the top layers. There is a sensation of warmth and one patient has described the sensation as similar to being popped repeatedly by a rubber band. Ouch! The body sheds the damaged skin and new, healthy skin immerges.
After care is similar to the treatment for a really bad sunburn. You will need to clean with a gentle cleanser and avoid rubbing. Pain is minimal and recovery is fast. Again, think sunburn. Although the uses for lasers in rhinoplasty are limited at present, there will probably come a day when you can have a whole new face without being touched by a scalpel.
Certainly bleeding and scarring would be virtually eliminated. It's hard to realize that when we were kids, we marveled at all the movies depicting people sitting in chairs, being bombarded by lasers and miraculously transforming into perfect specimens. The future is now, and laser rhinoplasty is just the start of what may be accomplished.
Be aware that your insurance is unlikely to cover any laser rhinoplasty treatment. The FDA does not recognize laser therapy as a surgery, but as a medical procedure. Take heart; many plastic surgeons offer payment plans and there are companies that make medical loans at fairly low interest rates. Plastic surgery on instalment plans, what a concept.
