Becoming a plastic surgeon is a long process. Plastic surgery is a specialty that concerns correction and restoration of normal form and function. A person will need to commit to the process and the hard work involved. Plastic surgery is one of the highest paid surgical specialties with salaries ranging from $300,000 to $800,000 a year and up. Rhinoplasty is certainly one aspect of plastic surgery, but the surgeon must learn to operate on many different parts of the body.

It is advised to complete your third year clinical rotation before choosing a specialty. Many doctors serve a rotation with a plastic surgeon before making the decision to become one. You can become a plastic surgeon by doing a three year program of general surgery followed by a three year program of plastic surgery. This is known as an independent model.An integrated model is a six to seven year program that will include all of your surgical training.Rhinoplasty falls into the category of aesthetic plastic surgery and to some extent reconstructive plastic surgery.Nearly twelve million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2007. The use of plastic surgery has increased and crossed the ethnic lines with many more African Americans and Hispanic patients requesting cosmetic procedures. Rhinoplasty is one of the top five surgeries performed.

If you are considering plastic surgery you can find an endless supply of plastic surgeons online just by typing in plastic surgeon or rhinoplasty. Many websites are purely advertisements, but most contain some very good basic information about the preocedures offered. Most recommend a board certiifed plastic surgeon, but how is one board certifed? That is also a long process.

The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery provides board certification. Just of a few requirements beyond the obvious medical license include 300 Catergory 1 CME credits, ACLS certification, and 4 letters of recommendation. That's just a start. You will also have to pass a written and an oral exam and complete 50 units of CME every year thereafter to maintain certification. This holds plastic surgeons to the highest possible standards and assures that they are well trained in the latest developments in their field. It would certainly ease a patient's mind to know that their rhinoplasty would be performed by someone who had the passion and the will to submit to such rigorous standards.

Most plastic surgeons who perform rhinoplasty also perform many other cosmetic procedures. Within a practice, there may be doctors who see rhinoplasty as their specialty. These doctors are likely to more experience in all the variations of nose surgery.
