Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty is a highly specialized form of plastic surgery and is suited to the person who has had a nose job that is unsatifactory. Most often it is used to correct less than perfect or overly aggressive surgery that has left the patient with structural abnormalities, breathing difficulty, a polly beak, or a crooked nose tip. Doctors who specialize in revision rhinoplasty have had a lot more training and experience in nasal surgery. It is almost always more complicated and expensive than routine rhinoplastic surgery. Although botched nose jobs account for a large percentage of patients, it is also of great use in treating cancer patients who have lost part of the nose and cartilege. Cartilege and skin grafts can restore support and improve the patient's appearance. A skilled surgeon can do amazing things in terms of corrective surgery.
It is best to wait at least a year after a nose surgery before doing revision rhinoplasty. It gives the original incisions time to heal properly. The scar tissue will be softer and easier to manipulate and remove, and there should be no swelling by that time. Aproximately 25% of all nose job patients are dissatisfied with their results for some reason. Scar tissure that makes breathing difficult or even noisy with whistling is one thing that needs correction. Some patients also experience rhinorrhea, which is chronic post nasal drip. while this is not uncommon after rhinoplasty for a few months, if it persists beyond that it should be addressed. Scar tissue, breaking of the nasal bones, surgical instruments and sometimes just bad luck can result in these problems.
Repeated dissatisfaction with surgical results is another matter. If you have had two plastic surgeries by two different surgeons and are still unhappy with your results, it is a good idea to rethink your reasons for doing the surgery in the first place. Some people lose track of what is attractive or are unable to see what really looks good on them. These people may have an image disorder and will never be satisfied. Surgery should never be done as a fix for something else that is wrong in a person's life, or because someone else thinks you will look better with a new nose. Think carefully before proceeding with another operation because each time it will be more difficult, you will have spent more money and may still be unhappy with the results.
There are surgeons who do only revision procedures and it makes sense to take advantage of their additional training and experience. When consulting with a surgeon, be clear about what you really hope to accomplish and listen to the suggestions they make. Most practices have before and after photos of their work. You may be able to see what your results will be like by use of a computer program. Taking everything into consideration, having realistic expectations, and finding a good surgeon will probably make your revision rhinoplasty a good answer to your problems.
