Rhinoplasty is a common surgery that is used to improve the appearance of a nose you may be unhappy with. Many women and even younger teens are extremely self conscious about the size or shape of their noses. After all, it is right in the middle of your face and pretty hard to miss!

While most of us would not go to the extreme, some celebrities have to achieve what they believe to be “perfection”, and a little reshaping can make a tremendous difference in how you look and feel. Think of Jennifer Grey, aka Baby in Dirty Dancing. Just by straightening that little bump on her nose made her into a different person. Now, nobody will put her into a corner! Now that we have determined that you may hate your nose, let’s explore a little bit about how to get your new and improved look.

Rhinoplasty is more commonly referred to as a nose job. Although most people consider it to be a strictly cosmetic procedure, there are other reasons to consider it. For example, the surgery can also correct defects that impair your breathing or correct an injury to the nose. Wouldn’t it be nice to be rid of chronic stuffiness or the reminder of that soccer ball to the face during a gym class? In the cosmetic sense, it can balance the features and improve your appearance. It is wise to research the procedure and the surgeon thoroughly for the best results. A board certified plastic surgeon who specialises in rhinoplasty is a must.

Although many people are adults when they have the surgery, keep in mind that younger candidates should be at least in their mid teens for girls and slightly older for boys. At this point the nasal bones are mature and the shape of the nose is stabilized. It is important to have realistic expectations and discuss them with the surgeon prior to the procedure. Don’t ask for Jennifer Anniston’s nose as it may not suit your face. The surgeon can take into account your bone structure and make suggestions to achieve the best possible individual results.

While this procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis, it is still surgery and carries with it the risks of any anaesthetized procedure. You may experience bleeding, infection, and have reactions to antibiotics or the anaesthesia itself.

Although uncommon, small scars and red spots from burst blood vessels may occur and may require a secondary procedure to correct this. Don’t let that scare you. Most of the time these things do not happen. You just have to be aware that they can. The surgery takes from one to four hours and you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. It is also helpful to fill any prescriptions for pain medications ahead of time. You can expect some post surgical swelling and bruising and ice packs applied around the nose will help with this. This is a great time to get as much pampering as you can and a good excuse to lounge around and watch movies. Many people report looking much worse than they feel. Most people stay at home for about a week and the bruising usually subsides within two weeks After that, feel free to enjoy your new look.

If you do your research and have realistic expectations, your rhinoplasty will improve your self-esteem and have you ready for that close up in no time at all.
